British contractor Safedem, which won Guinness World Records recognition for its demolition of the 165 m (541 ft) Mina Plaza building in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, took the overall ‘Best of the Best’ prize at this year’s World Demolition Awards in Chicago, USA.

It was a decisive double for the Dundee, Scotland-based company, which had already taken the Explosive Demolition category for the same project. The overall World Demolition Award is given to recognise the project the judges’ considered best across all shortlisted entrants.

Part of the World Demolition Summit – organised by Demolition & Recycling International in cooperation with the US National Demolition Association and the European Demolition Association – the awards honour innovation and best practice in 12 contractor categories as well as two more for equipment manufacturers.

Once again there was a diverse range of winners, as follows:

  • Urban Demolition over $10 million – Cantillon
  • Urban Demolition under $10 million – Mann Group
  • Civils – Mainline Demolition
  • Contract of the Year over $1 million – Priestly Demolition
  • Recycling and Environmental – Drumderg Services
  • Manufacturer Innovation, Plant and Equipment – Kocurek Excavators
  • Manufacturer Innovation, Tools and Attachments – Caterpillar
  • New Entrant – Volgaspetsstroy

The remaining three awards, in the Industrial, Contract under $1 million and Safety/Training categories, were all won by United Kingdom-based company Erith Contractors, continuing the company’s consistent success at the World Demolition Awards over the years.

Congratulations to all the winners at this year’s World Demolition Awards, and our thanks to all who entered as well as sponsors and awards judges.
