Using Goldhofer PST/SL self-propelled transporter combinations, PT LV Logistics set a new domestic record for the Indonesian heavy haul industry.

The plant components were delivered to the Balikpapan refinery in East Kalimantan in Borneo

The company delivered plant components to the Balikpapan refinery in East Kalimantan, in the East of Borneo.

Three Goldhofer PST/ SL self-propelled modules combined with THP/SL modules with 20 axle lines each carried the load.

Big investment

The Indonesian government is heavily investing in refinery development with a budget of US$17 billion. The money is to be spent on upgrading and modernising the five largest oil refineries in the country.

The Balikpapan refinery is one of the sites being upgraded. Plant components and equipment for residual fluid catalytic crackers (RFCC), which process crude oil into gasoline and diesel fuels, were ordered from Korean company Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The components included a disengager/stripper and two regenerators

The equipment was loaded onto the Korean Hanjin Leader heavy lift vessel and shipped to the port of Balikpapan. From there, the cargo was taken by PT LV Logistics and transported 3 kilometres overland to the refinery.

The total volume of the plant components was more than 24,500 cubic metres.

The components included a disengager and stripper weighing 1,031 tonnes and measuring 37.8 x 12.3 x 13.8 metres and two regenerators weighing 1,357 tonnes and 1,003 tonnes, and measuring 28.9 x 17 x 16.1 metres and 33.6 x 14.1 x 15.2 metres, respectively.

Record breaking

Transportation of the first regenerator alone set a new record as the heaviest and most voluminous load transported in Indonesia to date.

The transport – with a total weight of 1,597 tonnes, an overall length of 34 metres and a width of more than 11 metres – had to be navigated around several 90 degree corners in the refinery.

The project was completed in five days.
