Liebherr 1160 re-constructing 'Palais'

24 April 2008

Luxembourg: Schmidbauer, a subcontractor of Austrian company HF-Industriemontage, is using a 160 tonne (177 ton) capacity Liebherr LR 1160 crawler on a job in Luxembourg at the heart of the European Court of Justice, which is being rebuilt to meet changing requirements. The two-and-a-half year, $357 million building project includes construction of the Palais, which is a special challenge for the contractors. Existing walls are being integrated into the new building and need extensive renovation.

In addition, around 1,700 tons of the existing structure are to be reconditioned and re-used. A total of 5,500 tons of steel will have to be lifted and the beams weigh up to 12 tons and are up to 78 feet long. Crane requirements included strong capacity at long radii, boom configuration flexibility and the ability to travel with a load on the hook. Maximum radius on site is 200 feet, where the maximum load capacity, with luffing jib, is 2.5 tons.
