Beginnings: Philip Levine began hauling commodities between Boston and Portland, Maine in 1920; relocated to Paterson, New Jersey in 1924 and purchased an old International truck to transport scrap iron and coal.

Milestones: Began operating as Silk City Trucking Company in the early 1930s after purchasing a 10-ton truck, one of the first flatbeds of its capacity in the area. Went into bankruptcy during depression, reemerging in 1944 under present name. Philip Levine handed over control to son Alfred Lee in 1948. Relocated into new larger, more accessible quarters and Al Lee's son Barry joined company in 1972.

The company today: Facilities include a 40,000 square foot electronically heated warehouse with a 25 ton overhead crane, inside railroad siding and a 75 ton truck scale situated on 5 1/2 acres. Equipment includes heavy duty tractors, 33 flatbeds, lowboys, drop decks, 400 ton posted hydraulic gantry, 80 ton mini jack system, and a 30,000 pound industrial cherry picker.

End of an era: The list of founding members still belonging to SC&RA is expected to grow shorter later this year. As Alfred Lee moves into retirement, Main Trucking & Rigging is in the process of ceasing operations. Barry Lee is now engaged in work with another company in the transportation sector.
