Mammoet Canada aids Seaspan in ship launch

07 March 2018

Mammoet Canada recently assisted Seaspan Shipyards in the launch of the first Offshore Fisheries Sciences Vessels (OFSV) designed and built for the Canadian Coast Guard. Mammoet provided an additional 60 axle-lines of SPMT trailers to the shipyards existing 32 axle-lines of SPMT trailers to help transport the 207-foot long ship to its dock. The OFSV1 is one of three new vessels which will be used for scientific research and ecosystem-based management of Canada’s fisheries.

Prior to the launch, Mammoet Canada worked closely with Seaspan on a technical review of the proposed SPMT transportation plan. Together, the 92 axle-lines mobilized the 2700-ton ship from its load-out pier to the 430-foot floating dry dock in approximately three hours. Water ballasts facilitated the ship’s seamless float-off launch into Vancouver harbour following the load-out operation.

Having successfully completed the heavy-lift transport operations for the OFSV1, Mammoet Canada is looking forward to working with Seaspan on the similar planned SPMT transport operations for the next two OFSVs.
