The new LG 1800-1.0 wheeled mobile lattice boom crane has been announced to replace the LG 1750, popular worldwide over many years for wind turbine erection.

Manufacturer Liebherr in Germany said the new 800 tonne capacity model, to be launched in the first half of 2024, combines the mobility of a wheeled mobile crane with the load capacity of a crawler crane. Like its predecessor it is likely to be popular for wind turbine erection and maintenance.

On a nine axle carrier instead of the eight axles of its predecessor, the new model can travel with an axle load of ten tonnes. Its carrier is 3 metres wide and the axle arrangement means it is suitable for all world markets. Weighing in at 90 tonnes with all four outriggers onboard, it can also travel with two outriggers, at an all up weight of 70 tonnes or with all four outriggers removed, for a total of 50 tonnes.

The new LG 1800-1.0 lifts the same as its crawler crane counterpart, the LR 1800-1.0. Features include V-Frame, VarioTray, the WindSpeed load charts function and a ZF Traxon Torque transmission with ECOdrive.

Another change from the outgoing 750 tonner is that the folding beam outriggers are simpler in that they are not telescopic. The support base of 13 x 13 metres is sufficient to achieve the required load capacities. A further benefit is that the fixed outriggers are more stable and save weight. A quick coupling system makes them easier to attach and detach.

Being able to handle gradients of up to 25 per cent helps when working in hilly areas where wind farms are often located.

Boom systems from the LR 1800-1.0 crawler crane can also be used on the new truck crane. Just the main boom can be up to 180 metres long. The maximum boom and luffing jib combination is 108 + 102 metres, giving a maximum hook height of 208 metres.

For wind work the new crane can be configured with 174 metres of main boom and an 18 metre lattice type fixed jib for wind turbines with a hub height of 180 metres.

In addition to using the same boom and jibs from its crawler counterpart, the new model can use the ten tonne counterweight slabs on other cranes in the owner’s fleet.
