Power transfer

30 April 2008

Taylor Crane and Rigging, Inc. won its Job of the Year award for the transportation, handling and installation of a MAN 32/40 diesel generator package, supplied to the city of Clay Center, Kansas by Fairbanks Morse Engine Company of Beloit, WI.

Moving and installing the 340,000 pound generator presented several rigging and lifting challenges. Taylor Crane used its 600 ton capacity, telescopic hydraulic gantry to lift and transfer the generator package from a rail car to a dual–lane transport dolly system. The haul that followed required Kansas Department of Transportation approval for movement over long span bridges on the 40 mile route.

Installation of the generator package required two movements: first through a narrow doorway over a suspended floor and then a drop of approximately 10 feet to its foundation in the power plant. Taylor Crane custom designed, engineered and fabricated two 8–inch thick transfer beams and additional rigging gear to move the equipment through the tight confines of the door and onto the foundation.

The entire job was delivered without incident, no injury to personnel or damage to equipment or property, and with satisfaction to the client, Fairbanks Morse; the owner, City of Clay Center; and to the Kansas DOT.

Th is was the second SC&RA Job of the Year award to Taylor Crane and Rigging. The first win came in 1990 for lifting a flue gas cooler in a reffinery.
